Where is Goldbug? A game based on Richard Scarry's book
The book "Cars and trucks and things that go" by Richard Scarry is a real treasure for young vehicle lovers. My son has been enchanted by it since 2.5 though we started reading it much earlier.
In my opinion, one of the main advantages of this book is that it contains plenty of illustrations and not a big amount of text. It is like a Wimmelbuch but even more interesting since it includes several storylines. Lots of pictures stimulate imagination and develop speaking skills because you can describe images and add more details to the main story. Illustrations are very creative: some of them are real vehicles and some of them are a work of fiction, for example, a hot dog car or pickle truck.
The book provides great opportunities for discussion: description of transport and its usage, deduction about passengers and their destination, etc.
I came across a great idea for the game based on "Cars and trucks and things that go" in this blog. The aim of the game is to find Goldbug who is one of the main characters.
You will need:
- A Goldbug figure which I made from a yellow clothespin. I glued eyes from felt and used a black rubber band for whiskers.
- cars and trucks of different sizes.
When your child turns away, hide Goldbug in one of the vehicles. It is convenient to pin it on a body, a box, or a bucket. Then a kid tries to find it. Help with directing questions: Where is Goldbug? Is he on a bus? In the dump truck? He might be in the excavator's bucket. When Goldbug is found, the game is starting again.
You can also hide Goldbug in/on other objects: curtains, shelves, a tablecloth, and so on.
Enjoy the book and the game!
